Inkblogs: Balikbayan Blues (Friendster on 11.3.05)

With the frantic pace of exodus out of the country, it's such a refreshing view to see people come back here even for a while.

Been on my third visit to Taiwan last October 24 on a business trip. This time I didn't tour the place as I have probably visited most of Taiwan's attractions in my past two visits. I just dropped by Taipei 101, World's tallest skyscraper the day before I went home.

Auntie Letty and Uncle Oca came from the US to be here for a few weeks. I just saw them for one day since they arrived in Baguio City the same day I was to go back to Manila. We had dinner at Giligans Baguio together with my mother, sister, cousins and nephews. Well, my Auntie Letty was much help when I was still studying it was a good thing I had free time to meet her again. The case was different when my two cousins arrived last month since I was so busy that the only commincation I had with my cousins was just a phone call.

Yesterday, I had dinner with friends Joie, Jhun, Flor and Neville at Centro on the occasion of Joie's short vacation on the Philippines. Her first visit here since she started working in Singapore last January. After which, we had a round of singing at Music21 in Malate. FYI for Edmond and Christian... It was Jhun who paid for dinner...

In a week, I'd have to "balik-labas" instead of "balikbayan" since I have to be on a short business trip to China in the cities of Shandong and Shanghai... Well, after that, it's time to go balikbayan once again... hehe...

Inkbloks: One long gimmicky night in FinEng (Friendster on 10.21.05)

Had our final dinner in our Financial Engineering class yesterday and it was a very very long night... It started with a Dinner for the whole class at Rastro in Rockwell... The food and wine was great... Actually, just seeing all the food, I was already full... and the owner was very accomodating... Had a great time here especially since I was on the wackier side of the dinner table.

Transfered at Music 21 in Jupiter at around 10 pm for some songs and entertainment... At first, no one wanted to hold the mic but; factor in a bit more time and a few glasses of beer... then comes a group of people singing at the top of their voice... and the fun begins... Stayed here until we've managed to gulp down two barrels of beer... thanks for the bartending skills of our very own professor...

The night wasn't over though as we went to Starbucks in Rockwell for a round of coffee... which ended up featuring stories of former outing of Sir Lito's class... which ironically ended up into a conversation about ghosts... hehe... must be the spirit of alcohol... not to mention all soul's day coming in a few weeks... After a few stories... the night was over...

An exhilarating ending to our financial engineering class which proved to be a very challenging subject... going over all those derivative products and being up to date with the latest development in each corner of the world... and of course, a lot of cramming for the final paper and the final exam...

That's just makes the end a lot more fun... Hey, if you have to work hard, you'll just have to play hard... That's FinEng in a nutshell.

Inkblogs: Festivities Galore (Friendster on 9.25.05)

When I started this blog, I had initially titled it as “final paper” galore as most of my final paper would be due in the next few days with the term about to end. However, the end of last week was occupied by festivities being the birthday celebration of my friends.

After my Financial Engineering class last Friday, I had dinner at Bubba Gump at GB3 with Jay Anne, Donald and Madrid. After which, we met the celebrants, Mark and She at Grappas, also at GB3 this time for a round of pizza and trying out various liquors at Grappas. Eventually, we went home around 1:30 am.

The next day, it was Arlyn’s birthday at dish in ABS-CBN compound. There’s a live band there but the highlight of the night was dropping by for a few minutes the Pinoy Big Brother house to witness the second eviction night since it was just within the compound.

As for the final paper galore, it has come back to a full circle and back to preparing my report on Operations Management and Exotic Options for my MBA classes. Fortunately, I did make some headway in my final paper as I was able to squeeze it in to my regular lazy Sunday afternoon schedule…. Ciao!!!

Inkblogs: Send-off Rendezvous (Friendster on 9.15.05)

Send-offs are starting to be a common these days for CPA Auditors since the world has been one big global market place for skills. Thomas Friedman, in his book, "The Lexus and the Olive Tree" opined that globalization started when the Berlin Wall fell in 1989. In my opinion, the audit profession blossomed when the high and mighty Enron fell, resulting to certain shifts in the accounting standards. A global arena + a shift in the accounting standards = more opportunity for Filipino CPA Auditors. This has led to an exodus of talented people to foreign soil. Come to think of it, I've lost count already of my friends who took a bite in the global pie of opportunity.

So much for the semantics, we had dinner at CPK Glorietta as a send off to our colleague, Jay Anne, who in a few weeks would be transferring to an audit firm in the United States. Present during the dinner was FAA, our former engagement partner, Ms. Carol, our favorite manager when we were still in SGV and other colleagues, Donald, Kreng, Che and Denise. We had a nice chatty dinner and a lot of catching up in each of our ongoing epics of our lives. It was a great time and could have been better had the others been not prevented by the stormy weather.

As for my own send-off, that would be the day yet to be determined but going into the last term of my MBA... MBA has been fun, enriching and exciting experience... Thrill and anxiety awaits me at the end of this journey... as the crossroads leads to several paths... where anything goes and as in every global market....it’s an open market...

Inkblogs: Travel Tips from Around the World (Friendster on 7.26.06)

For the past three years, I’ve had the chance to travel mostly on business and a few on pleasure. The following are the tips and experiences I’ve learned in being from a country away from home

Paris 2003

1. When you’re lost just find a stranger "Silvoupley, Champs Elysee" – Champs Elysee is the grand boulevard of Paris. By being able to find Champs Elysee, it would be easier to locate where you are.
2. It’s cheaper to buy souvenir near Notre Dame compared to Eiffel Tower – It would also be good to have a picturesque view of Paris on top of the famous Notre Dame Cathedral.
3. If you’d want to go to Eiffel Tower, go early as droves of tourist would also want to get to see the tower. It’s also windy up there.
4. Using the subway system is a cheaper way to travel. Paris has a well developed subway system that could take you anywhere in Paris. Just remember, to be familiar with a few stations so you’d know where you came back.
5. Versailles is a must see… The grandeur of the castles which triggered the French Revolution would be an excellent site to watch.
6. Take a tour via Bateaux Mouches (cruise) at night to have a view of Paris at night.
7. Enrich the soul by visiting the body of St. Catherine in Miraculous Medal, which has not been decayed even after death. The Miraculous Medal is located near Rue De Bac Metro Station.
8. Get on the artist’s bandwagon by visiting the Artist Village, near Sacre Couer. In front of Sacre Couer, you’ll have a top view of Paris.
9. Visit Disneyland in Paris. It’s quite from the city proper but it’s still worth the travel to have a Disney experience.

Amsterdam 2003

10. The famous red light district is here (guys… definitely a must visit)
11. The temperature here is constantly cool since the city is built around a dam. In other words, below sea level. Actually, it's called Amsterdam since it's a city in covered by a dam blocking the Amster River.
12. Most of the houses here are slightly tilted sideways leaning against each other.
13. Traveling via bicycle is common here.

Hong Kong 2003

14. To have a great view of the whole Island, go to Victoria Peak at night.
15. Teddy Bear Kingdom and Ocean Park, along with its dolphin shows and giant aquarium are definitely a place to visit for families and kids. I can’t wait for Disney here.
16. A challenging adventure is to visit the world’s largest outdoor sitting Buddha… A long travel since you have to take a one hour ferry ride to another island and another 1 hour bus ride to the top of the island.
17. Shopping is a must do here… really reasonable price and excellent range of choices.
18. Don’t miss the laser and light show at night conducted by the Hong Kong Department of Tourism.
19. Traveling via bus and MRT is convenient here.

Taiwan 2004 and 2005

20. Bring a jacket. I’ve been here twice during March of 2004 and 2005 and for two years in a row, I always manage to end up not bringing my jacket. It’s real cold during the season.
21. Have a Chinese colleague to write the key places you have to go to (hotel, office, etc.) since some of the taxi driver can’t speak English.
22. Traveling via MRT here is also easy; however, some of the names of the station are not spelled the same way as in the map. The key here is to find a name which sounds like the station spelled in the map. (E.g. Jingmei, sometimes Xingmei).
23.Taipei 101 is now the world’s tallest skyscraper…
24. Tamshui, found at the northernmost part of Taiwan, is an interesting place to visit. Walking along the coast line and the fisherman wharfs.
25. For a view of the Chinese culture, it would help in going to temples and hall for Chang Kai Shek and Sun Yat Sen.

Shanghai 2004

26. The Oriental TV Tower is located in Shanghai. The so-called Eiffel Tower of Asia. It is the third tallest tower in the world and the tallest in Asia.
27. The Bund is definitely a night destination. Old buildings illuminated with bright lights is a site to behold.
28. Take a peak at different creatures of ocean by visiting Ocean Adventure… just beside the Oriental TV Tower.
29. The Yu Garden provides a picturesque view for people who love nature. The area also provides for cheap souvenirs from Shanghai.
30. Temples and museums provide a good grasps of the Chinese culture.
31. Be sure of having the Chinese names of places you’d want to visit since some of the taxi drivers here doesn’t speak English. Also take the MRT as an alternative means of transportation.
32. Another shopping haven… prices are really low. Imagine two main roads allotted just for shopping.

Singapore 2005

33. Sentosa – definitely a must see. The musical fountain has an excellent light show at night. You can pass up visiting the aquarium as this pales in comparison compared to Hong Kong and Shanghai’s version. (Actually, I still have to complete my tour of the place… hehe…)
34. Stroll the Orchard Road at night and experience Singapore at night. I love the Ice Cream worth S$1. I actually tried eating all the flavors during my stay in Singapore.
35. The night safari is the zoo at night but mostly consist of nocturnal creatures. I actually saw "the batman"; here. hehe...
36. The avian falls at the Jurong Bird Park is the world’s tallest manmade waterfalls.
37. Snow City is an excellent alternative to enjoying a winter experience.
38. Other notable places to visit include the Singapore Botanical Garden, Chinatown, and the different malls and parks.
39 Traveling via MRT and bus is very convenient.

Inkblogs: A Writer Reborn (Friendster on 7.26.2005)

I always had a passion for writing. I called my regular column in our college publication, “inkblots.” The passion to write at times brought me to places, where even unprepared, I still was able to write a fine piece of inkblots. Now, let me rechristen the title into something more in tune to the current time… “Inkblogs.”

The pen was always a great pal back then… an outlet of emotion… a channel for creative juices… I used to have this marathon-like exercise in writing short stories, columns, articles, poems and others… as if my hand had a mind of its own. Then somehow along the way, I ran out of ideas… drained all my fresh thoughts I once had… I knew as a writer I needed to be less naïve and more experienced. The writer in me has been on the sideline, exploring life and what it has to offer.

Now, I relive the passion… not as a career but rather as a hobby... not through a publication but rather through the net… not through inkblots but through “inkblogs.”

A writer is reborn…

My First Blog (Friendster on 7.11.05)

Busy days are quite common in existing as a young urban professional and taking an enormous load in graduate school... Somehow, events comes out with its heartbeat stopping twist... and the plot thickens... deadlines come and still come and still come (hey... why don't they go)...
I always believe that each person has a story to tell and a life to live... Each one being a hero in his own story with all the twist and turns that unravel as we wake up day by day... each having to face conflicts and roadblocks... each story having its ups and downs... each story climaxing to a certain ending... The ending we create by the choices we make...
Decisions are made each moment... decisions which may impact a lifetime... The odd part is that we don't always come up with the right choices... Being able to react positively or negatively to this defines our character... Success is not based on who gets the most but rather on who is happiest with what he got...
